The phrase about pouring from an empty cup can be a useful reminder to pause. It does not mean you must resolve every difficult feeling before you can care for others or deserve support yourself.

Everyone carries stress, grief, anger, uncertainty, and hope at different times. Those experiences do not make you a burden. They can be an invitation to notice what you need and choose one manageable form of care.

Before you give more of yourself away, it can help to ask what would support you right now.

A short reflection

Take one minute to consider: What am I carrying today? What is one need I have not named? What is one small action that could support me? Your answer might be rest, a meal, a boundary, a conversation, or time with someone who helps you feel connected.

Connection can be part of care

Self care is not a requirement you must complete alone. Supportive relationships, community, and professional care can all be part of a healthier response to a difficult season.

When counseling may help

If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from what you need, counseling may offer a dedicated space to talk it through. A routine inquiry can help you ask about current options and fit.
